Although we are a few days late for Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, we do not want to miss an opportunity to encourage reading today and everyday! Research shows the importance of reading to children cannot be overstated. We also want to suggest that even beyond intellectual development, family time spent cuddled in bed reading children’s books together makes for wonderful family bonding time and ultimately, memory making.
We are so pleased our friends over at PartyIdeaPros have compiled a list of favorite Dr. Seuss books from Classic Seuss to Dr. Seuss Nursery books to Dr. Seuss Bright and Early Books to Dr. Seuss Beginner books. They are listed in alphabetical order by category and included is a small picture to jog your fond memories. As huge Dr. Seuss fans, we were actually a bit surprised we were unfamiliar with some of the books on this list. We also love their idea of making Dr Seuss a baby shower theme and helping the new mom fill her nursery with the entire Dr. Seuss collection. Ribbon tied stacks of Dr. Seuss books also make for great children’s birthday presents. And of course, one of our favorite graduation gifts is the classic Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!. Update March 2021
This week, Dr. Seuss Enterprises LP, which oversees Dr. Seuss’s publishing interests and ancillary areas, announced six of Dr. Seuss’s books will no longer be published. After an in depth review of all of his works, they concluded the books contained offensive images and that the egregious racial and ethnic stereotypes in the works “are hurtful and wrong.” They also believed that Theodor Geisel himself would support the decision, today.
The six books are:
- And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street
- If I Ran the Zoo
- On Beyond Zebra
- McElligot’s Pool
- The Cat’s Quizzer
- Scrambled Eggs Super
